Construction of the Glenelg Tram Overpass structure
South Road closed for Glenelg Tram Overpass Project works
To facilitate the efficient completion of major road works at the Glenelg Tram Overpass site, the section of South Road between the Gallipoli Underpass and the Emerson Overpass will be closed to through traffic from 10pm Friday 19 February to 10pm Sunday 21 February 2010.
Access to local roads and local businesses will be maintained, however traffic will not be permitted to use the Gallipoli Underpass or the Emerson Overpass.
These road works include:
The following changes will be in place:
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and use alternative routes.
Adelaide Metro bus services will be detoured around the closure. Tram services will not be affected during the closure.
Temporary tram track removal on Norman and Glengyle Terraces
The tracks have now been removed and the space is being used to complete the construction of the shared use path along the northern side of the overpass.
By retaining the one way traffic movement on Glengyle and Norman Terraces for a little longer, we can ensure that works are completed safety and as efficiently as possible.
Additionally, the pedestrian lights across South Road will remain in place until we complete works on the lifts/stairs and the shared use path over South Road.
We anticipate that these works will be completed in March 2010.
New road link between Norman Terrace and Aroha Terrace
Construction works on the new road that will link Norman Terrace to Aroha Terrace has commenced. This new road will be open for traffic on Wednesday 10 February 2010 and will allow the closure of Norman Terrace at South Road. This link road will operate as a one way road until Norman Terrace is fully reinstated and two way movements are allowed again.
Once completed, all access to and from Norman Terrace from South Road will be via Aroha Terrace and this new link road. I would ask that you pay attention to road signage associated with this new link road.
Tram stop 6
It is anticipated that tram stop 6 will reopen in March 2010. Works are continuing on all the associated elements to provide a first class public transport facility at this location.
Tramline closed Friday 4 to Monday 7 December 2009.
Glenelg Tramline will be closed from 10pm on Friday 4 until first service Monday 7 December 2009 to allow for the relocation of the tram tracks onto the new tram overpass structure. The new structure will be operational from Monday 7 December 2009, however tram stop 6 will still remain closed until early 2010. South Road will not be affected by these works.
The closure will be from 10pm on Friday 4 December and will be closed all of Saturday and Sunday. Alternate bus services will be provided. For more information about the alternative services, please visit adelaidemetro.com.au or contact the AdelaideMetro customer infoline on 8210 1000.
Those living in close proximity to the work area may experience some periodic disturbance while works are in progress over this weekend. Night works will be undertaken on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December 2009 to connect the new track up to the existing tramline. These works will be similar to those undertaken during our July weekend shutdown.
Once the trams start using the new structure, the pedestrian lights across South Road will remain in place until works are complete on the lifts/stairs and the shared use path over South Road. We anticipate that these works will be completed early 2010. Similarly, we will begin to remove the temporary tracks and reinstate Norman and Glengyle Terraces back to two way operation, which will also be completed in early 2010.
Tramline Closure -Weekends of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, and Saturday 24 October and Sunday 25 October 2009.
The Glenelg Tramline will be closed on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, and Saturday 24 October and Sunday 25 October 2009. These closures will facilitate the placement of the beams required to create the new tram overpass structure.
During these closures, there will be no tram services from the last service on the Friday night and until the first service on Monday morning. Bus substitutes will be provided. For more information about these alternate services, please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au or contact the AdelaideMetro customer infoline on
8210 1000 or 1300 3 111 08.
We are closing the tramline for these three weekends to allow us to lower 42 beams into place in a staged manner. Each beam weighs between 60-80 tonnes, is 30 metres in length, and requires careful positioning. It is expected that the bridge structure will be in place over South Road by 25 October 2009.
South Road Closure from 6am and 7pm on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2009.
South Road will also be closed at the tram crossing from 6am and 7pm on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2009. Through traffic will be detoured between ANZAC Highway and Cross Road. Local traffic access arrangements will be maintained throughout this time.
What next?
The weeks following the erection of the tram overpass structure will be spent stitching the bridge, which is a process where we will tie all of the beams together. The new track will also be laid on the structure and final formwork will occur to make the structure operational by Christmas 2009.
The shelter canopy was erected on the weekend of the 28 November. In addition to this the lift shaft panels were also constructed.
As a gesture of our apprecoation for the support and goodwill of the residents living opposite the constuction site, the project team recently conducted some site tours, ahead of the first team using the newly completed tram overpass. Residents were able to enjoy a close up view of the site and the opportunity to chat with the Project Director and Site Supervisor and other key project staff to get detailed information about the construction processes.
From Tuesday 24 November 2009 the project team will begin to coat the structure in a layer of “anti-graffiti” paint that allows for the easy removal of graffiti. The painting will take place between 6pm and 6am. Additionally, works will begin on welding the rail track for the overpass structure. These works be undertaken between the hours 7am to 11pm.
Cyclists currently using the one-way east bound route on Norman and Glengyle Terraces' heading west will be detoured onto Aroha Terrace and Nottingham Crescent from Monday 27 July 2009.
This cyclist detour will encourage cyclists to divert onto Aroha Terrace and cross South Road via the newly constructed pedestrian refuge on the southern side of the tram crossing. Cyclists will then use the western footpath on South Road, which has been changed into a shared use path, to enter onto Nottingham Crescent to continue to head west.
The project team has undertaken a site investigation and met with the relevant councils to discuss the safest method of detouring cyclists off Norman and Glengyle Terraces' for the duration of our works. We feel that this is safest and most convenient option for cyclists. Signage will be in place to direct cyclists to this detour.
This stop will be closed for the duration of the Glenelg Tram Overpass Project construction works to ensure the safety of all road users.
Please use alternate Bus Stop 7 located approx 100m south.
Preliminary works have begun on the verge area on the northern side of the tram corridor in preparation for the temporary tram tracks. Over the coming weeks temporary poles for the overhead tram wires and rubble will be brought to the site and there will be increased truck movements during this time.
The department apologises for any inconvenience these works may cause.
If you have any questions regarding these works please Contact Us.
Stage one of our construction program is scheduled to commence May / June 2009. These preliminary works are associated with the temporary relocation of the tram tracks outside of the tram corridor so space can be made to build the overpass whilst minimising disruption to existing tram services. This will also allow construction workers to work safely within a restricted corridor, separated from trams and their associated electrical wires. These temporary tracks will be operational until the overpass structure is completed late this year.

As part of this project, there will be a number of occasions where South Road will need to be closed for a weekend period to undertake works at the intersection, particularly when construction workers will lift in heavy beams for the overpass structure. Advance notice will be given to the local and wider community prior to these closures.
