Jetty Road Glenelg Tram Rail Replacement Project

Jetty Road Glenelg

Tram Tracks Replacement Project

Update

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has rescheduled the replacement of the Jetty Road tram tracks to now commence on Monday, 15 May 2017.

The works will now commence after Mother’s Day, which is an important trading day for Jetty Road businesses, and are scheduled to be completed by Friday, 9 June 2017, weather permitting in time for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

To complete works as quickly and efficiently as possible, works will occur 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with Jetty Road closed to traffic between Brighton Road and Moseley Square. Jetty Road businesses will operate as usual.

Disability parking and taxi ranks will be located as close as possible to existing locations. Pedestrian access along Jetty Road and to local businesses will be maintained.

By working around the clock and with the construction staging adopted, the timing of impact to Jetty Road has been reduced significantly.

About the project

During May and June 2017, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) will be replacing tram tracks along Jetty Road, Glenelg.

These works are necessary as the existing tram tracks and associated infrastructure have reached the end of their useful life. New rail and associated infrastructure will be installed to ensure the continuation of safe and reliable tram services.

Tram Stop 16 on Jetty Road will also be upgraded to improve cyclist safety.

Jetty Road traffic

To minimise disruption to tram passengers, businesses, residents and visitors to the Jetty Road precinct, the works will be undertaken from Monday 15 May to Friday 9 June 2017 inclusive.  During this period, Jetty Road will be closed to all road users however pedestrian access to businesses along Jetty Road will be maintained at all times and businesses will operate as usual.

DPTI appreciates your patience and cooperation whilst these important works are undertaken.

What the works will entail

The $2.7m project will include the removal and replacement of the existing tram tracks and the concrete housing the tracks on Jetty Road between Moseley Square and Brighton Road Glenelg.

These works will require cutting the concrete and other surfaces around the tracks. New tram rails will be welded together to form 90 metre lengths on Dunbar Terrace, Glenelg East, prior to being installed along the length of Jetty Road, from Brighton Road to Moseley Square.

Some noise can be expected while works are completed, however every effort will be made to minimise disturbance to businesses and local residents.

The construction works will require large trucks to access Jetty Road to deliver materials including tram rails and to remove construction waste such as concrete. Heavy machinery will also need to be transported to and from the work site.

Heavy vehicles will be restricted to the main roads wherever possible including Anzac Highway, and Brighton Road. Heavy vehicles will need to use local streets to access Jetty Road at times, however this will be mitigated where possible.

During construction on Jetty Road

Tram services to Glenelg will terminate at Stop 15 Brighton Road until completion of the project.

Bus services that use or cross Jetty Road will be re-routed to avoid the construction site and will follow the bus routes used during major events. For information about the temporary routes, please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au or alternatively please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au/user/register to sign up to My Metro to receive updates when there are changes to travel conditions, straight to your inbox or mobile phone

Traffic detours will be in place throughout the works with signage advising motorists of the changed traffic conditions. Road users are requested to observe traffic signs and restrictions.

Pedestrian access to businesses along Jetty Road will be maintained at all times during the construction period, with pedestrians able to cross Jetty Road at Brighton Road, Moseley Street and Moseley Square. An additional pedestrian crossing will be provided on the western side of the intersection of Jetty Road with Gordon and Partridge Streets.

Car parking along Jetty Road will not be available during the construction period. Signage will be in place to direct motorists to alternative public parking sites. Disabled parking will be relocated 60 metres north of current locations and be clearly identified with signage.

Loading zones located in side streets and to the rear of businesses will remain in place during construction. However, loading zones on Jetty Road will be temporarily removed during construction and relocated to side streets in close proximity to Jetty Road.

Haulage routes

During the construction period, large trucks will access the site to deliver materials including steel rails and remove construction waste such as concrete. Heavy machinery will also need to be transported to and from the work site.

Heavy vehicles will be restricted to main roads wherever possible including Anzac Highway, Colley Terrace, Jetty Road and Brighton Road. Occasionally, heavy vehicles will need to use local streets to access Jetty Road, however this will be mitigated where possible.

Construction machinery associated with the works will be stored at the southern end of Byron Street, Waterloo Street, Nile Street and Sussex Street. Pedestrian access to Jetty Road will be maintained at these locations.

A site compound will also be established on the Jetty Road end of Nile Street.
