Completion of Jetty Road works

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) is pleased to announce works will be completed a week ahead of schedule on the Jetty Road Tram Tracks Replacement Project.

Tram services between Brighton Road (Stop 15) and Moseley Square (Stop 17) are expected to resume from first service on Saturday 3 June 2017 following successful test running later today. Adelaide Metro bus services in the area will also return to their usual routes.

The $3.7 million project involved replacing the tram tracks on Jetty Road, Glenelg, between Brighton Road and Moseley Square, to ensure the continuation of safe and reliable tram services on Jetty Road into the future.

Replacing the tracks on Jetty Road will further improve the reliability and safety of these services, while making the journey smoother for passengers and reduce noise.

Continuous work allowed completion in 19 days, 7 days less than scheduled, minimising the period of impact to the local community and re-opening Jetty Road as quickly as possible.

The tram network is consistently our most reliable transport network, with more than 98% of services arriving on time.

DPTI and SA Water are continuing to work together to minimise impacts to Jetty Road traders with upcoming water main replacement works which are planned to occur outside of trading hours.

DPTI thanks road users, tram patrons and the local community for their patience, during these important works.

DPTI would also like to especially acknowledge and thank the Jetty Road traders for their patience and understanding during this time, and our contractors, workers and staff for their dedication in completing these works ahead of schedule.

About the Project

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) is undertaking works to replace the Jetty Road tram tracks from Monday 15 May 2017 to Friday 9 June 2017, inclusive.

The works will start after Mother’s Day, which is an important trading day for Jetty Road businesses, and are scheduled to be completed by Friday 9 June 2017, weather permitting, in time for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

To complete the upgrade as quickly and efficiently as possible, works will occur 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with Jetty Road restricted to traffic between Brighton Road and Moseley Square. By working around the clock and with the construction staging adopted, the timing of impact to Jetty Road has been reduced significantly.

During this period, Jetty Road will be closed to all road users; however, pedestrian access to businesses along Jetty Road will be maintained at all times as Jetty Road businesses will operate as usual.

Disability parking and taxi ranks will be located as close as possible to existing locations. Pedestrian access along Jetty Road and to local businesses will be maintained.

These works are necessary as the existing tram tracks and associated infrastructure have reached the end of their useful life. New rail and associated infrastructure will be installed to ensure the continuation of safe and reliable tram services.

DPTI appreciates your patience and cooperation whilst these important works are undertaken.

What the works will entail

The $3.7 million project will include the removal and replacement of the existing tram tracks and the concrete housing the tracks on Jetty Road between Moseley Square and Brighton Road Glenelg.

These works will require cutting the concrete and other surfaces around the tracks. On Dunbar Terrace, Glenelg East, new tram rails will be welded together to form 90 metre lengths prior to being installed along the length of Jetty Road, from Brighton Road to Moseley Square.

Some noise can be expected while works are completed; however, every effort will be made to minimise disturbance to businesses and local residents.

The construction works will require large trucks to access Jetty Road to deliver materials including tram rails and to remove construction waste such as concrete. Heavy machinery will also need to be transported to and from the work site.

Heavy vehicles will be restricted to main roads wherever possible including Anzac Highway, Colley Terrace, Jetty Road and Brighton Road. Occasionally, heavy vehicles will need to use local streets to access Jetty Road; however, this will be mitigated where possible.

Construction machinery associated with the works will be stored at the southern end of Byron Street, Waterloo Street, Nile Street and Sussex Street. Pedestrian access to Jetty Road will be maintained at these locations.

A site compound will also be established on the Jetty Road end of Nile Street.

During construction on Jetty Road

Tram services will continue to travel to Glenelg and terminate at Brighton Road (Stop 15) until 7.30pm for the duration of the project. After 7.30pm, tram services will terminate on Morphett Road (Stop 12).

FREE tram travel will be in place between Morphett Road (Stop 12) and Brighton Road (Stop 15) for the duration of the project. In conjunction with the South Australian Jockey Club, the Morphettville Racecourse overflow car park will be used as a free park-and-ride to encourage continued patronage of businesses along Jetty Road, while it is restricted for motorists.

FREE substitute bus services will operate after 7.30pm in place of trams between Morphett Road (Stop 12) and Brighton Road (Stop 15). These substitute bus services will travel along Maxwell Terrace stopping at temporary bus stops adjacent the tram platforms at Glengowrie (Stop 13) and Glenelg East (Stop 14) on the south and north sides of the road.

Buses will turn south into Malcolm Street, right into Rugless Terrace and right into Fortrose Street, Glenelg East, to reposition for the outbound trip along Maxwell Terrace back to Morphett Road. For more information on public transport services during this project, please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au

Trams will return to normal service from first service Saturday 10 June.

Bus services that use or cross Jetty Road will be re-routed to avoid the construction site and will follow the bus routes used during major events. For information about the temporary routes, please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au or alternatively please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au/user/register to sign up to "My Metro" to receive updates straight to your inbox or mobile phone regarding changes to travel conditions.

Traffic detours will be in place throughout the works with signage advising motorists of the changed traffic conditions. Road users are requested to observe traffic signs and restrictions.

Pedestrian access to businesses along Jetty Road will be maintained at all times during the construction period with pedestrians able to cross Jetty Road at Brighton Road, Moseley Street and Moseley Square. An additional pedestrian crossing will be provided on the western side of the intersection of Jetty Road with Gordon and Partridge Streets.

Car parking along Jetty Road will not be available during the construction period. Signage will be in place to direct motorists to alternative public parking sites. Disabled parking will be relocated as close as possible to existing locations and be clearly identified with signage.

Loading zones located in some side streets and to the rear of businesses may be relocated during construction. Traffic control will assist when required. Loading zones on Jetty Road will be temporarily removed during construction and relocated to side streets in close proximity to Jetty Road.
