City Tram Extension
On 5 July 2016, the State Government committed $50 million in funding for the first stage of the AdeLINK tram network to the city’s East End, as part of this year’s State Budget. To view the News Release please click here.
An additional $20 million investment to purchase three additional trams and construct an additional stop at the Festival Plaza has been announced as part of the 2016-17 Mid-Year Budget Review.
The new stop will improve access to the Festival Plaza which is being transformed into a world-class destination which will be the heart of Adelaide's Riverbank entertainment precinct.
The Adelaide City Council will contribute an additional $5 million to help fast-track the project, by providing upgrades to the public realm and contributing to the planned East End tram stop.
The Budget commitment will deliver a one-kilometre extension along North Terrace, from King William Road to East Terrace.
It will provide a new service to the bustling East End shopping, restaurant and tourism precinct, while further invigorating the city's cultural and education boulevard. It will also help to reactivate vacant sites, including key buildings along North Terrace.
Together the tramline extension to the East End and new stop at Festival Plaza are expected to support about 83 jobs during construction.
The extension forms Stage One of the EastLINK, with future stages planned to the eastern suburbs through Kent Town. The extension also marks the first stage in the CityLINK loop around the CBD.
The extension will feature four new stops, one on King William Road servicing the Festival Plaza and three new stops along North Terrace servicing the museum and library precinct, universities and the Old Royal Adelaide Hospital Site.
The Government’s vision for the AdeLINK tram network has been endorsed as an Infrastructure Australia priority initiative following the State Government’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Plan.
