Project start and end dates

The upgrades will occur over the next two financial years.

Pre-construction activities, including service relocation and tree removals will commencenced early 2012.

Construction on Main North Road/ Black Rock-Clare Road Junction upgrades commenced Thursday 1 March 2012.

The first stages of the project will be completed by June 2012 with the remaining work to be completed by March 2013 (weather permitting).

Improvements in safety and traffic flow

The following works will be undertaken:

The realigned and upgraded road will provide a smoother ride and better cater for speeds of up to 100 km/h throughout the length of this section of road. The completed realignment works will reduce both the potential for road crashes and travel time for road users.

Funding Sources

The $10.23 million project is funded by the Rural Freight Improvement, Responsive Road Safety and Transport System Responsiveness programs.

Traffic Restrictions

Speed and lane restrictions will apply at various stages during construction.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution when passing through the road works and are thanked for their patience during the project.

Given the strategic nature of this transport network, works will be performed under operating traffic conditions (that is no road closures or significant detours) and will also be undertaken in stages.

Detailed Project Works

Map of whole project site

Project Area J1
Main North Road/ Black Rock-Clare Road Junction
This junction will be the first to be constructed. Minor alterations will be made to the junction layout to change the road priorities, with the existing Main North Road to the west becoming the terminating leg. Much needed pavement reconditioning will also be undertaken at this site.

Project Area J2
Black Rock-Clare Road/ Anama Lane Junction
This junction will be the second junction to be constructed. The upgrade will accommodate 100 kilometre per hour speeds on the new through road and cater for B-double movements along each leg of the junction. The Black Rock-Clare Road will terminate at this junction.

Project Area RU
Anama Lane Upgrade
Pavement upgrades and surfacing will be undertaken to accommodate Main North Road traffic types and volumes. The configuration of this section of road will have 3.3 metre lane widths and 2 metre shoulders. Works will also involve the installation of batters, drainage, protective and safety barriers; and tree removals will also be undertaken where necessary.

Project Area J3
Main North Road/ Anama Lane Junction
The junction of Main North Road and Anama Lane will be the last junction constructed. The upgrade will accommodate 100 kilometre per hour speeds on the new through road and cater for B-double movements along each leg of the junction. The existing Main North Road from the south will terminate at this junction, with existing road priorities changed. Completion of this junction will then carry Main North Road traffic on the new realignment.
