Dukes Highway

Background

The Dukes Highway forms the majority of the Adelaide-Melbourne Road Corridor in South Australia. It begins at the Princes Hwy, Tailem Bend, heading east through the lower Mallee through the towns of Coomandook, Coonalpyn, Tintinara, Keith and Bordertown before ending at the Victorian Border, 18km east of Bordertown. The total length of the Dukes Highway in South Australia is 191 km and it was declared a National Highway as part of the Melbourne-Adelaide link on 20 November 1974.

About the Project

Road improvements are being guided by the 2009 Adelaide-Melbourne Road Corridor Study and involve a suite of safety-related counter-measures, as well as pavement rehabilitation projects along the 284 km length of the corridor in South Australia.

Since 2008-09, approximately $20 million has been spent on installing roadside hazard protection, providing new and upgraded roadside rest areas, undertaking road surface rehabilitation, shoulder sealing, delineation and extending four overtaking lanes.

Further stages of the project will focus primarily on addressing roadside hazards and preventing head-on collisions. Projects will include vegetation management, the installation of safety barriers and wide centreline treatments, along with further overtaking lanes, intersection upgrades and safety improvements within towns.
